What does Working Gear do?

We assist low income unemployed men in their return to the workplace by providing work appropriate clothing at no cost. These men are seeking jobs in a wide range of industries and we provide them with everything from boots to suits. We provide either business casual work wear such as jackets or suits for job interview purposes or construction gear for men looking for work in the trades.

Can I get both construction gear and an interview suit?

We are happy to provide either business casual interview wear or construction gear. It depends on what you need to get back to work.

Who does Working Gear assist?

Working Gear helps unemployed men in the Vancouver downtown and downtown eastside who are in need of our services and support.

How can I access this service?

We need to know that you are unemployed and making a serious effort to return to work. We request that all of our customers get a referral from a referring agency. Examples include: Family Services Employment Services, Union Gospel Mission, Pathways and Tradeworks.

Does it cost a lot to keep Working Gear in operation?

Working Gear has very low overhead costs. Financial donations go directly into programs and services.

Can I use the services of Working Gear more than once?

We allow our customers to use our services once every six months.

Can I use Working Gear if I am a woman?

If you are a woman, we invite you to use a service called Dress for Success that provides a similar service only for women. Please contact them via telephone at (604) 408 – 7923 or email at vancouver@dressforsuccess.org.

Can I use the services of Working Gear if I am employed?

No. If you are employed, we ask you to use alternative services. If you are unsure of your employment status, please ask.

How can I contact somebody at Working Gear?

Working Gear does not have a telephone. Send us an email at workinggear@gmail.com and we will reply as soon as possible.

Where is Working Gear located and when is it open?

Working Gear is located at 87 East Pender Street, Vancouver B.C. inside the Tradeworks offices. Our offices are open Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Can I just show up and pick up some free work clothes?

No. You need to make an appointment. Call one of our booking agencies and ask for a referral to Working Gear. There is no cost, but you must make an appointment.

What kind of help can I provide to Working Gear?

Working Gear is always looking for volunteers and for donations of good quality used suits, jackets and business casual wear and construction gear. We could also use any financial donations that you would like to make.

I have some clothes I would like to donate to Working Gear. How can I do this?

We are happy to accept donations of business casual clothing and construction clothing. Please ensure the clothing is in good repair and clean. We ask you to drop the clothing off at our office at 87 East Pender Street on Saturday mornings when we are open between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
